Alexander Ypsilantis

Alexander Ypsilantis, Ypsilanti, or Alexandros Ypsilantis (Greek: Αλέξανδρος Υψηλάντης Alexandros Yipsilantis; Romanian: Alexandru Ipsilanti; Russian: Александр Константинович Ипсиланти Aleksandr Konstantinovich Ipsilanti; 12 December 1792 – 31 January 1828) was a Greek nationalist politician who was member of a prominent Phanariot Greek family, a prince of the Danubian Principalities, a senior officer of the Imperial Russian cavalry during the Napoleonic Wars, and a leader of the Filiki Eteria, a secret organization that coordinated the beginning of the Greek War of Independence against the Ottoman Empire.

The Ypsilantis family hailed from the Pontian population of Trabzon. He was born on 12 December 1792 in Constantinople, the capital of the Ottoman Empire, as the eldest of three brothers (the others being Nicholas and Demetrios).[1] His father Constantine Ypsilantis and grandfather Alexander were active in the Ottoman administration and highly educated, each with their own share of service as a dragoman in the Sultan's court and as hospodars of the Danubian Principalities.

With the outbreak of the Russo-Turkish War in 1805, his father fled with family to Imperial Russia. The young Alexander had received a thorough education, becoming fluent in Russian, French, German and Romanian. At the age of 15, he was presented to the Russian Court, where he came under the patronage of Empress Maria Feodorovna.[1]

Lake Zahl National Wildlife Refuge

Lake Zahl National Wildlife Refuge is a 3,823-acre (1,547 ha) National Wildlife Refuge in Williams County in the U.S. state of North Dakota.[2] The refuge consists of Lake Zahl which provides habitat for many species of waterfowl and other species.[3] It is managed by the Crosby Wetland Management District.[4]

Zap, North Dakota

Zap was founded in 1913 along a branch line of the Northern Pacific Railway that began in Mandan. The exact origin of the name is uncertain, though there are numerous unconfirmed theories; some say the town was named after Zapp, which was either a prominent Minnesota banking family or a coal-mining town in Scotland.[6][7] Zap has been noted for its unusual place name.[8]

The town of Zap is probably most widely known for the Zip to Zap riot, which occurred on May 10, 1969. The Zip to Zap was originally intended as a spring break diversion. Between 2000 and 3000 people descended upon the town after an article by Chuck Stroup, originally appearing in the North Dakota State University Spectrum newspaper, and then later picked up by the Associated Press, compelled busloads and chartered planes full of people from around the United States to go there.

The amiable revelry began early with an all-night party in the streets outside an overwhelmed small bar. When the mayor finally exited the bar in the middle of the night and discovered a bonfire on main street and realized the size of the crowd in his tiny town, he panicked and called the governor, William Guy. At dawn, marching in formation and armed with bayonets placed, the National Guard invaded the town and forced the crowd to leave Zap. The event moved to several other towns before the Governor announced that a park in Bismarck would host the crowd. The then-popular rock station, KFYR, and their disc jockeys were in communication with event organizers and falsely reported where the crowd had gone before they arrived, effectively directing all the listeners on which small town and park to proceed to next. In one village, locals cleaned out the Farmers Union of every implement handle in order to patrol their town against the wave of invading hippies and cowboys.

Zeeland

Zeeland (/ˈziːlənd/; Dutch pronunciation: [ˈzeːlɑnt] (listen), Zeelandic: Zeêland [ˈzɪə̯lɑnt], historical English exonym Zealand) is the westernmost and least populous province of the Netherlands. The province, located in the south-west of the country, consists of a number of islands and peninsulas (hence its name, meaning "Sealand") and a strip bordering Belgium. Its capital is Middelburg. Its area is about 2,930 square kilometres (1,130 sq mi), of which almost 1,140 square kilometres (440 sq mi) is water, and it has a population of about 380,000.

Large parts of Zeeland are below sea level. The last great flooding of the area was in 1953. Tourism is an important economic activity. In the summer, its beaches make it a popular destination for tourists, especially German tourists. In some areas, the population can be two to four times higher during the high summer season. The coat of arms of Zeeland shows a lion half-emerged from water, and the text luctor et emergo (Latin for "Ik worstel en kom boven" (I struggle and emerge)).[2] The country of New Zealand was named after Zeeland after it was sighted by Dutch explorer Abel Tasman.

Nehalennia is a mythological goddess of an ancient religion known around the province of Zeeland. Her worship dates back at least to the 2nd century BC,[3] and flourished in the 2nd and 3rd centuries AD.[3] She was possibly a regional god, either Celtic or pre-Germanic – but sources differ on the culture that first worshipped her. During the Roman era, her main function appeared to be the protection of travelers, especially seagoing travelers crossing the North Sea. Most of what is known about her mythology comes from the remains of carved stone offerings (votives) which have been dredged up from the Oosterschelde (Eastern Scheldt) since 1970. Two more Nehalennia offering stones have also been found in Cologne, Germany.[3]

Wildrose, North Dakota

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 110 people, 63 households, and 27 families residing in the city. The population density was 379.3 inhabitants per square mile (146.4/km2). There were 91 housing units at an average density of 313.8 per square mile (121.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 96.4% White, 2.7% Native American, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 4.5% of the population.

There were 63 households of which 14.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 36.5% were married couples living together, 6.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 57.1% were non-families. 47.6% of all households were made up of individuals and 22.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.75 and the average family size was 2.52.

The median age in the city was 52.6 years. 12.7% of residents were under the age of 18; 3.5% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 14.5% were from 25 to 44; 46.4% were from 45 to 64; and 22.7% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 49.1% male and 50.9% female.

Williston, North Dakota

Williston is a city in and the county seat of Williams County, North Dakota, United States.[5] The 2010 census[6] gave its population as 14,716, and the Census Bureau gave the 2017 estimated population as 25,586, making Williston the sixth-largest city in North Dakota. The North Dakota oil boom is largely responsible for the sharp increase in population.

Williston's newspapers, both in print and online, are the daily Williston Herald and the weekly The Williston Trader. Sloulin Field International Airport is a public airport 3.2 km (2.0 mi) north of the business district. Williston is the home of Williston State College and the Miss North Dakota Scholarship Pageant.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 7.56 square miles (19.58 km2), of which 7.50 square miles (19.42 km2) is land and 0.06 square miles (0.16 km2) is water.[1]

Willow City, North Dakota

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 163 people, 84 households, and 47 families residing in the city. The population density was 354.3 inhabitants per square mile (136.8/km2). There were 123 housing units at an average density of 267.4 per square mile (103.2/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 95.1% White, 0.6% African American, 2.5% Native American, and 1.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.6% of the population.

There were 84 households of which 14.3% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 44.0% were married couples living together, 7.1% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.8% had a male householder with no wife present, and 44.0% were non-families. 40.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 19.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 1.94 and the average family size was 2.60.

The median age in the city was 51.2 years. 16% of residents were under the age of 18; 6.1% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 17.1% were from 25 to 44; 34.3% were from 45 to 64; and 26.4% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 54.0% male and 46.0% female.

Wilton, North Dakota

Wilton is a city in Burleigh and McLean counties in the State of North Dakota. It is part of the "Bismarck, ND Metropolitan Statistical Area" or "Bismarck-Mandan". The population was 711 at the 2010 census.[5] Founded in 1899, Wilton was named by General W. D. Washburn after the town of Wilton in his native state of Maine.

Wilton was platted in 1899 when the railroad was extended to that point.[6] The city was named after Wilton, Maine, the native home of an early settler.[7] A post office has been in operation at Wilton since 1900.[8] Wilton was originally built up chiefly by Ukrainians.[9]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 711 people, 317 households, and 188 families residing in the city. The population density was 1,128.6 inhabitants per square mile (435.8/km2). There were 358 housing units at an average density of 568.3 per square mile (219.4/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 96.3% White, 2.1% Native American, 0.1% Asian, 0.6% from other races, and 0.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.3% of the population.

Wimbledon, North Dakota

Wimbledon is a city in Barnes County, North Dakota, United States. The population was 216 at the 2010 census.[5] Wimbledon was founded in 1892. It was named for Wimbledon, London, which was the birthplace of John H. Gibson, who homesteaded the land the town was built on.[6]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 216 people, 94 households, and 55 families residing in the city. The population density was 407.5 inhabitants per square mile (157.3/km2). There were 119 housing units at an average density of 224.5 per square mile (86.7/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 97.2% White and 2.8% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.5% of the population.

There were 94 households of which 31.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 40.4% were married couples living together, 14.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 3.2% had a male householder with no wife present, and 41.5% were non-families. 39.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 17% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 3.11.

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 152 people, 66 households, and 41 families residing in the city. The population density was 257.6 inhabitants per square mile (99.5/km2). There were 90 housing units at an average density of 152.5 per square mile (58.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.1% White, 2.6% Native American, and 3.3% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.

There were 66 households of which 24.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.0% were married couples living together, 7.6% had a female householder with no husband present, 4.5% had a male householder with no wife present, and 37.9% were non-families. 31.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.1% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.30 and the average family size was 2.98.

The median age in the city was 45.5 years. 26.3% of residents were under the age of 18; 3.3% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 19.8% were from 25 to 44; 31.6% were from 45 to 64; and 19.1% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the city was 52.0% male and 48.0% female.
