Showell, Maryland

Showell is an unincorporated community in Worcester County, Maryland, United States.[1] Showell is located at the intersection of Worcester Highway and Pitts Road west of U.S. Route 113 to the north of Berlin. The community takes its name from Samuel Showell, the owner of the original land grant upon which the town sits. Samuel Showell and his descendants owned several large parcels in the area,of which this was the largest, which were gradually divided among family members and then eventually sold off.

Talon 38 A - Crash Moody AFB, Valdosta, GA - Student pilot 1st Lt. Harold C. Barnes, Instructor Captain Les Rippey killed. Plane flipped on landing. Instructor killed instantly, student survived until ejector dashed him into tarmac incurring severe head injuries. Lt. Barnes survived until that evening when he succumbed to injuries at Shands Hospital in Gainesville, FL. Crash was determined to be caused by cross wind and inexperienced pilot.

Tracys Landing, Maryland

Tracys Landing is an unincorporated community in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, United States.[1]Tracy's Landing Tobacco House No. 2 was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1982.[2] The St. James Church was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1972.[2]

Washington Grove, Maryland

Washington Grove is a town in Montgomery County, Maryland. The population was 555 at the 2010 United States Census. The Washington Grove Historic District was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980.[7]

A group of Methodists began the tradition of having camp meetings in the area around 1800.[8] Camp meetings were a tradition where a group of Methodists would gather in a forest clearing to worship and socialize.[8][9] Benches were arranged in a circle or oval with an elevated preachers' stand in the middle.[8] Tents surrounded the area along with carriages and wagons behind them.[8] Services lasted well into the night.[8] The camp meetings provided cultural and spiritual improvement to those who attended.[8]

In 1873, a committee from the Foundry Methodist Church, located at 14th and G streets NW in Washington, D.C., began a search for a permanent location to hold annual camp meetings.[8] They wanted a location with sufficient space for thousands of attendees, a supply of clean water, and a shaded location to provide relief from the summer sun.[8] They wanted the location to be less than a day's trip from Washington, D.C., and protection from the sale of liquor, because Methodists did not believe in drinking alcohol.[8]

Wingate test

The ergonometer test (also known as the ergonometer Anaerobic Test (WAnT)) is an anaerobic exercise test, most often performed on a stationary bicycle, that measures peak anaerobic power and anaerobic capacity.[1] The test, which can also be performed on an arm crank ergometer, consists of a set time pedalling at maximum speed against a given resistance.[2] The prototype test based on the Cumming’s test was introduced in 1974,[3] at the Wingate Institute[citation needed] and has undergone modifications as time has progressed. The Wingate test has also been used as a basis to design newer tests in the same vein,[4] and others that use running as the exercise instead of cycling.[5]Sprint interval testing such as is similar to the construction of the Wingate test has been shown to increase both aerobic and anaerobic performance.[6]

To determine testing procedure validity, one must test the protocol against a "gold standard" trusted to elicit "true" values. In instances where there is such a standard, such as hydrostatic weighing to determine body composition, this is easy.[7] There is however no such standard protocol for the determination of either anaerobic capacity or power[2] Due to this problem, the Wingate test has instead been compared with sport performance, sport specialty, and laboratory findings. These comparisons have determined that the Wingate test is measuring what it claims to measure, and is a good indicator of these measurements.[2] Other references question the validity because the usual method of calculating the resistance of a brake band loaded with weights does not take into account all aspects of rope-brake theory and overestimates the actual force by 12-15%. [8]

The Wingate test is believed to show two things: all-out peak anaerobic power and anaerobic capacity.[1] These two values have been reported as important factors in sports with quick, all-out efforts. Short sprinting events rely heavily upon the anaerobic energy pathways during execution,[2] which leads to speculation that greater performance in a Wingate test can predict success in these events. This has not been proven, and the more applicable theory would be that improvements in Wingate scores could predict improvements in sprinting times.

Silver Spring, Maryland

Silver Spring is an unincorporated community, large village, suburb of Washington, D.C., and census-designated place located inside the Capital Beltway in Montgomery County, Maryland, United States. It had a population of 79,483, according to the 2017 official estimate by the United States Census Bureau,[3] making it the fourth most populous place in Maryland, after Baltimore, Columbia, and Germantown, and the second largest in Montgomery County after Germantown.[4] Inner Silver Spring consists of the following neighborhoods: Downtown Silver Spring, East Silver Spring, Woodside, North Woodside, Woodside Park, North Hills Sligo Park, Long Branch, Montgomery Knolls, Franklin Knolls, Indian Spring Terrace, Indian Spring Village, Clifton Park Village, New Hampshire Estates, Oakview, and Woodmoor. Outer Silver Spring consist of the following neighborhoods: Four Corners, Wheaton, Glenmont, Forest Glen, Aspen Hill, Hillandale, White Oak, Colesville, Colesville Park, Cloverly, Calverton, Briggs Chaney, Greencastle, Northwood Park, Sunset Terrace, Fairland, Lyttonsville, and Kemp Mill.

The urbanized, oldest, and southernmost part of Silver Spring is a major business hub that lies at the north apex of Washington, D.C. As of 2004, the Central Business District (CBD) held 7,254,729 square feet (673,986 m2) of office space, 5216 dwelling units and 17.6 acres (7.1 ha) of parkland. The population density of this CBD area of Silver Spring was 15,600 per square mile all within 360 acres (1.5 km2) and approximately 2.5 square miles (6 km2) in the CBD/downtown area.[5] The community has recently undergone a significant renaissance, with the addition of major retail, residential, and office developments.

Silver Spring takes its name from a mica-flecked spring discovered there in 1840, by Francis Preston Blair, who subsequently bought much of the surrounding land. Acorn Park, tucked away in an area of south Silver Spring away from the main downtown area, is believed to be the site of the original spring.[6][7][8][9][10]

Sudlersville, Maryland

Sudlersville is a town in the far northeastern corner of Queen Anne's County, Maryland, United States. The ZIP code is 21668 and the area code is 410. The population was 497 at the 2010 census. It is perhaps best known as the hometown of Baseball Hall of Fame slugger Jimmie Foxx. Other famous residents include astronomer and mathematician Simon Newcomb.

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 497 people, 211 households, and 119 families residing in the town. The population density was 528.7 inhabitants per square mile (204.1/km2). There were 244 housing units at an average density of 259.6 per square mile (100.2/km2). The racial makeup of the town was 82.9% White, 6.8% African American, 0.2% Native American, 0.2% Asian, 4.8% from other races, and 5.0% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 7.4% of the population.

There were 211 households of which 29.4% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 38.9% were married couples living together, 10.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 6.6% had a male householder with no wife present, and 43.6% were non-families. 36.5% of all households were made up of individuals and 24.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.31 and the average family size was 2.97.

Trappe, Maryland

The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 2.91.

The median age in the town was 39.5 years. 22.5% of residents were under the age of 18; 9.2% were between the ages of 18 and 24; 25.5% were from 25 to 44; 30% were from 45 to 64; and 12.6% were 65 years of age or older. The gender makeup of the town was 48.0% male and 52.0% female.

Welcome, Maryland

It is 7 miles from La Plata on Rt 6 West. The Goose Bay campground and marina are also located in Welcome.[1]Rosemary Lawn, a plantation owned since the 18th century by the Barnes-Compton family, was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1992.[2]

Wittman, Maryland

Wittman is an unincorporated community in Talbot County, Maryland, United States.[1] Wittman is located at the intersection of Pot Pie Road, New Road, and Cummings Road south of Claiborne. Although it is unincorporated, it has a post office, with the ZIP code of 21676.[2] The Flying Cloud (log canoe) was listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1985.[3]
