Wallace, Kansas

Wallace is located at 38°54′49″N 101°35′31″W / 38.91361°N 101.59194°W / 38.91361; -101.59194 (38.913671, -101.591874).[8] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.40 square miles (1.04 km2), all land.[1]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 57 people, 24 households, and 16 families residing in the city. The population density was 142.5 inhabitants per square mile (55.0/km2). There were 32 housing units at an average density of 80.0 per square mile (30.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 100.0% White.

There were 24 households of which 29.2% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 58.3% were married couples living together, 8.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 33.3% were non-families. 29.2% of all households were made up of individuals and 12.5% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.38 and the average family size was 3.00.

Westphalia, Kansas

Westphalia is located at 38°10′52″N 95°29′27″W / 38.18111°N 95.49083°W / 38.18111; -95.49083 (38.181226, -95.490698).[9] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 0.19 square miles (0.49 km2), all of it land.[1]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 163 people, 62 households, and 39 families residing in the city. The population density was 857.9 inhabitants per square mile (331.2/km2). There were 77 housing units at an average density of 405.3 per square mile (156.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 90.2% White, 1.8% African American, 1.8% Native American, 0.6% from other races, and 5.5% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.5% of the population.

There were 62 households of which 43.5% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.5% were married couples living together, 12.9% had a female householder with no husband present, 6.5% had a male householder with no wife present, and 37.1% were non-families. 33.9% of all households were made up of individuals and 16.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.41.

Woodston, Kansas

The town of Woodston was established along the Missouri Pacific Railroad in 1885 as a railroad town between Bull City (Alton) and Stockton. Woodston was named for Stockton businessman Charles C. Woods who was instrumental in getting railroad service to Stockton.[7]

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 136 people, 53 households, and 38 families residing in the city. The population density was 566.7 inhabitants per square mile (218.8/km2). There were 82 housing units at an average density of 341.7 per square mile (131.9/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 94.9% White, 1.5% African American, 2.9% Asian, and 0.7% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 0.7% of the population.

Walnut, Kansas

Walnut is located at 37°36′01″N 95°04′33″W / 37.600359°N 95.075867°W / 37.600359; -95.075867 (37.600359, -95.075867).[10] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.00 square mile (2.59 km2), of which, 0.99 square miles (2.56 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water.[1]

There were 108 housing units at an average density of 109.1 per square mile (42.1/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 96.8% White, 1.8% Native American, 0.5% from other races, and 0.9% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.6% of the population.

Wetmore, Kansas

As of the census[2] of 2010, there were 368 people, 140 households, and 89 families residing in the city. The population density was 943.6 inhabitants per square mile (364.3/km2). There were 152 housing units at an average density of 389.7 per square mile (150.5/km2). The racial makeup of the city was 96.7% White, 0.3% African American, 1.9% Native American, and 1.1% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 1.9% of the population.

There were 140 households of which 37.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 47.1% were married couples living together, 10.0% had a female householder with no husband present, 6.4% had a male householder with no wife present, and 36.4% were non-families. 30.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 14.3% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.63 and the average family size was 3.26.

Walton, Kansas

Walton is a city in Harvey County, Kansas, United States.[1] It is named in honor of one of the 19th century stockholders of Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway.[8][9] As of the 2010 census, the city population was 235.[10]

For many millennia, the Great Plains of North America was inhabited by nomadic Native Americans. From the 16th century to 18th century, the Kingdom of France claimed ownership of large parts of North America. In 1762, after the French and Indian War, France secretly ceded New France to Spain, per the Treaty of Fontainebleau.

In 1802, Spain returned most of the land to France. In 1803, most of the land for modern day Kansas was acquired by the United States from France as part of the 828,000 square mile Louisiana Purchase for 2.83 cents per acre.

White City, Kansas

White City was founded in 1871 by a colony from Chicago.[7] It was named for F.C. White, superintendent of the Neosho division of the M-K-T Railroad, which was built on the land in 1868, prior to the existence of the community.[8] Prior to the naming of the community, other names considered were "New Chicago" (because the founders came from Chicago) and "Swedeland" (because so many Swedes settled in the community).[9]

In 1887, the Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway built a main line from Topeka through White City to Herington.[11] The Chicago, Kansas and Nebraska Railway was foreclosed in 1891 and taken over by Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railway, which shut down in 1980 and reorganized as Oklahoma, Kansas and Texas Railroad, merged in 1988 with Missouri Pacific Railroad, merged in 1997 with Union Pacific Railroad. Most locals still refer to this railroad as the "Rock Island".

White City is located at 38°47′43″N 96°44′12″W / 38.79528°N 96.73667°W / 38.79528; -96.73667 (38.795216, -96.736657).[12] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 1.26 square miles (3.26 km2), of which, 1.25 square miles (3.24 km2) is land and 0.01 square miles (0.03 km2) is water.[1]

Yates Center, Kansas

Yates Center was founded in August 1875. It was named for Abner Yates, the original owner of the town site, who donated an entire block around the courthouse, land for the churches, a city park, and a lot each for the first two children born in the town.[8][9] Yates Center is the only town in Kansas to be selected as a county seat before there was a house or inhabitant within its boundaries.[9]

Wamego is located at 39°12′15″N 96°18′30″W / 39.20417°N 96.30833°W / 39.20417; -96.30833 (39.204074, -96.308328).[9] According to the United States Census Bureau, the city has a total area of 2.25 square miles (5.83 km2), of which, 2.21 square miles (5.72 km2) is land and 0.04 square miles (0.10 km2) is water.[1]

Wamego is located at the intersection of U.S. Route 24 and K-99. It is about 14 mi (23 km) east of Manhattan; and about 42 mi (68 km) west-northwest of Topeka. The Kansas River flows along the southern edge of the city.
