    Wever, Iowa

    Wever lies along U.S. Route 61, about 8 miles northeast of the city of Fort Madison, one of two county seats in Lee County. It is just South of the Iowa Army Ammunition Plant and the Skunk River, which empties further East into the Mississippi River. .[2] Its elevation is 561 feet (171 m).[1]

    Wever was a station on the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad.[3] Although Wever is unincorporated, it has a post office, which opened on May 1, 1837. This post office has a complicated name history: it opened as 'Sand Ridge', changed to 'Green Bay' on September 17, 1849, to 'Jollyville' on January 28, 1859, and finally to Wever on October 17, 1870.[4] Its ZIP code is 52658,[5]

    Wever was built around a station of the Chicago, Burlington and Quincy Railroad within Green Bay Township, and superseded the nearby town of Jollyville.     Washington was founded in 1839 as the county seat of the newly established Washington County. In 1854 it became the home of a United Presbyterian College, which was dissolved in 1864.     Welton, Iowa

    The community is located adjacent to U.S. Route 61, which passes around Welton just to the east of the city. Prior to the expansion of Highway 61 to a four-lane highway, it passed directly through the city. Following reconstruction of U.S. 61, a new truck stop was built adjacent to U.S. 61 near the southern edge of the city.

    Welton is one of the communities in the Central DeWitt Community School District, which spans a large portion of central Clinton County;[5] it was known as the Central Clinton Community School District until July 1, 2014.[6]

    For more than 40 years, the district operated Welton Elementary School to serve students in the north-central part of the district, with junior high and high school students being bused to DeWitt. According to the Quad City Times, "the 85-year-old school closed in 2005 because of budget constraints and declining enrollment,"[7] and on April 5, 2006 the 85-year-old Welton School building was demolished.[citation needed] Until 1961, the school building also housed junior high and high school students as part of the Welton Independent School District; sports teams were known as the Wolverines. The junior-senior high school was closed in 1961, when Welton, along with the former Grand Mound and DeWitt school districts, consolidated to form the Central Community School District.

    What Cheer (pronounced 'WOT-cheer') is a city in Keokuk County, Iowa, United States.     Woodbine was platted 1866 at the time the Chicago and North Western Railway was built through that territory.[4] It was incorporated as a town in 1877.[4] The town was named for the dense growth of the woodbine plant near the original town site.[5]

    Washta, Iowa

    Washta is a city in Cherokee County, Iowa, United States. The population was 248 at the 2010 census. It is called "The Coldest Spot in Iowa," recording a temperature of -47 degrees without wind chill on January 12, 1912.

    Washta's name dates back to 1868 when a local man named Whisman turned his farm into a trading post/mail stop for the freight train going from Correctionville, Iowa to Cherokee, Iowa. He was asked to be the official postmaster for the area. When asked what the name of his town would be, he recalled an interesting encounter with two Native Americans the year before. While Whisman was out hunting, the two came upon him, removed his gun, looked at it, and handed it back while saying, "Wash-tay, Wash-tay," meaning good. Changing the pronunciation slightly, Whisman decided he would call the town Washta.[4]

    Wheatland, Iowa

    Wheatland was platted in 1858 under the leadership of John Bennett.[4] The town was named for President James Buchanan's estate Wheatland in Lancaster, Pennsylvania.[5] The entire township (Spring Rock) had a white population of only 101 in 1850, but that number rose to 756 in 1860. A significant body of early settlers all came from the village of Wunderthausen in central Germany. The Germans founded the first church in town in 1857 with a Presbyterian affiliation. This relationship was dissolved in 1861 with the incorporation of St. Paul's German Reformed Church (now St. Paul's United Church of Christ). The First Presbyterian Church was organized in 1858, though no longer functions. Wheatland was legally incorporated on July 13, 1869.[6]

There were 317 housing units at an average density of 519.7 per square mile (200.7/km2).
