Trenton, Florida

Trenton is a city in Gilchrist County, Florida, United States. The population was 1,999 as of the 2010 census,[6] and in 2015 it was estimated to be 2,066.[7] It is the county seat of Gilchrist County.[8]

Trenton is located near the southern border of Gilchrist County at 29°36′54″N 82°49′4″W / 29.61500°N 82.81778°W / 29.61500; -82.81778 (29.615081, -82.817732).[9]U.S. Route 129 is the city's Main Street; it leads north 28 miles (45 km) to Branford and south 11 miles (18 km) to Chiefland. Florida State Road 26 (Wade Street) leads east 13 miles (21 km) to Newberry and 30 miles (48 km) to Gainesville, while to the west it leads 8 miles (13 km) to Fanning Springs. Florida State Road 47 (Trenton Boulevard) intersects US 129 in the northern part of Trenton and leads northeast 42 miles (68 km) to Lake City.

The first Paleo-Indians reached the central Florida area near the end of the last ice age, as they followed big game south.[10][11] As the ice melted and sea levels rose, these Native Americans ended up staying and thrived on the peninsula for thousands of years. By the time the first Spanish conquistadors arrived, there were over 250,000 Native Americans living on the peninsula. The Calusa were a historic tribe across the north central area of Florida, where Trenton later developed.

Daniel Webster (Florida politician)

Daniel Alan Webster (born April 27, 1949) is an American politician who has been a member of the United States House of Representatives since 2011. Webster, a Republican from Florida, represents Florida's 11th district since 2017 after having previously represented Florida's 8th congressional district and 10th district. Prior to his service in Congress, Webster served 28 years in the Florida state legislature.

After receiving his engineering degree from the Georgia Institute of Technology, he worked in the family air conditioning and heating business that he now owns and operates. He has been a resident of Florida since the age of seven and resides in Winter Garden, Florida.

First elected in 1980, Webster served 28 years in the state legislature in Tallahassee, becoming the longest serving legislator in Florida history.[1] During that time, he rose to become Speaker of the Florida House of Representatives and Florida Senate majority leader,[2] and left the legislature only after reaching the legal term limits in 2008.[3] He ran unopposed in all of his elections for the state legislature except for the first three; 1980, 1982, and 1984.[4]

Winter Park, Florida

Winter Park is a suburban city in Orange County, Florida, United States. The population was 27,852 at the 2010 United States Census.[6] It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Winter Park was founded as a resort community by northern business magnates in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. Its main street includes civic buildings, retail, art galleries, a private liberal arts college (Rollins College), museums, a park, a train station, a golf course country club, a historic cemetery, and a beach and boat launch.

The Winter Park area's first human residents were migrant Muscogee people who had earlier intermingled with the Choctaw and other indigenous people. In a process of ethnogenesis, the Native Americans formed a new culture which they called "Seminole", a derivative of the Mvskoke' (a Creek language) word simano-li, an adaptation of the Spanish cimarrón which means "wild" (in their case, "wild men"), or "runaway" [men].[7] The site was first inhabited by Europeans in 1858, when David Mizell Jr. bought an 8-acre (32,000 m2) homestead between Lakes Virginia, Mizell, and Berry. A settlement, called Lake View by the inhabitants, grew up around Mizell's plot. It got a post office and a new name—Osceola—in 1870.

Trilby, Florida

An earlier name for the town was Macon. The newer name Trilby was in use by 1895, although the Macon post office was not renamed Trilby until 1901. Trilby was named after the heroine in George du Maurier's novel of the same name. Railroad magnate Henry Plant changed the name of the town because it duplicated the name of Macon, GA. He has been quoted as saying he wished to name it "after the heroine of a story which has lately deeply moved me." Trilby was incorporated as a town in 1901 and again in 1913. Because of the loss of its railroad industry, it has declined into a residential community for Dade City, and also for the Tampa Bay region.

U.S. Highway 98 runs along the east side of Trilby, immediately to the north of a split with U.S. Highway 301 (US 301). In addition, Pasco County Road 575 passes through the center of town on a roughly east–west itinerary, and continues east toward adjacent Trilacoochee, followed by Lacoochee.

As of the census[3] of 2010, there were 419 people, 165 households, and 113 families residing in the CDP. There were 263 housing units. The racial makeup of the CDP was 62.53% White, 30.31% African American, 0.24% Native American, 0% Asian, 0% Pacific Islander, 5.49% from other races, and 1.43% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 11.46% of the population.

Weirsdale, Florida

Winter Springs, Florida

Winter Springs is a city in Seminole County, Florida, United States. The population was 33,282 at the 2010 census.[2] According to the 2013 Census Bureau estimates, the city has a population of 33,871. It is part of the Orlando–Kissimmee–Sanford Metropolitan Statistical Area.

As of the census of 2000, there were 31,666 people, 11,774 households, and 8,901 families residing in the city. The population density was 2,207.3 inhabitants per square mile (852.0/km²). There were 12,306 housing units at an average density of 857.8 per square mile (331.1/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 88.73% White, 4.59% African American, 0.19% Native American, 1.94% Asian, 0.04% Pacific Islander, 2.52% from other races, and 1.99% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 10.52% of the population. There is a Jewish community.[8]

There were 11,774 households out of which 38.1% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 61.2% were married couples living together, 11.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 24.4% were non-families. 18.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 6.4% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.69 and the average family size was 3.08.

Umatilla, Florida

Umatilla is a city in Lake County, Florida, United States. The population was 2,214 at the 2000 census. According to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2004 estimates, the city had a population of 2,502. Umatilla is known as the Gateway to the Ocala National Forest, located in northern Lake County.[1]

As of the census[4] of 2000, there were 2,214 people, 867 households, and 582 families residing in the city. The population density was 871.4 inhabitants per square mile (336.5/km²). There were 987 housing units at an average density of 388.5 per square mile (150.0/km²). The racial makeup of the city was 93.54% White, 3.52% African American, 0.23% Native American, 0.32% Asian, 0.95% from other races, and 1.45% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 3.93% of the population.

There were 867 households out of which 29.6% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 49.8% were married couples living together, 13.1% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.8% were non-families. 28.1% of all households were made up of individuals and 15.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.48 and the average family size was 3.01.

Welaka, Florida

Welaka is a town situated on the St. Johns River in Putnam County, Florida, United States. The population was 586 as of the 2000 census. According to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2004 estimates, the town had a population of 604. The town is part of the Palatka Micropolitan Statistical Area.

It is not known when the area was first settled, but the nearby Mount Royal archaeological site is a possible remnant of a Timucua Indian village from ca. 1250 to 1500 AD, and may have a connection to the town of Enacape, an important center of the Utina tribe.

The settlement was originally a 500-acre tract purchased by James William Bryant in 1852 and was known as Mt. Tucker. Prior to the war, there were large orange groves and cotton plantations. In 1860, Welaka's population was slightly over 100. At the end of the Civil War, fewer than 20 remained. The town grew again and was incorporated on June 21, 1887 and Welaka was affirmed as the town's name; the name Welaka is said to have been derived from the word local American Indians used for the St. Johns River. By the 1880s, Welaka had become a resort town, marketing itself to visitors seeking medicinal cures from the mineral water of the local springs. The Welaka Mineral Water Company was incorporated in 1907.[5]

Woodville, Florida

Woodville is a census-designated place in Leon County, Florida, United States, just south of Tallahassee, Florida. The population was 2,978 at the 2010 census. It is part of the Tallahassee, Florida Metropolitan Statistical Area. The American Civil War Battle of Natural Bridge, in March 1865, occurred in what is now Woodville, at the Natural Bridge (approximately six miles from Woodville proper). This is where the St. Marks River drops into a sinkhole, the Natural Bridge Sink and flows underground, reemerging .25 miles (0.40 km) later.[3]

As of the census[1] of 2000, there were 3,006 people, 1,182 households, and 855 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 427.8 people per square mile (180.5/km²). There were 1,278 housing units at an average density of 198.9/sq mi (76.7/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 79.34% White, 18.30% African American, 0.70% Native American, 0.13% Asian, 0.27% from other races, and 1.26% from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 2.00% of the population.

There were 1,182 households out of which 32.0% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 50.7% were married couples living together, 15.4% had a female householder with no husband present, and 27.6% were non-families. 21.7% of all households were made up of individuals and 7.0% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.54 and the average family size was 2.92.

Valparaiso, Florida

Valparaiso is a city in Okaloosa County, Florida, United States. As of the 2000 census, the city population was 6,408. According to the U.S. Census Bureau's 2004 estimates, the city had a population of 6,336. It is part of the Fort Walton Beach–Crestview–Destin Metropolitan Statistical Area.

Chicago businessman James E. Plew, who relocated to the Panhandle of Northwest Florida in 1922, became "one of Northwest Florida's pioneer developers,"[7] and settled on Valparaiso "as the most likely spot for development. He founded the Bank of Valparaiso, constructed the Valparaiso Inn [in 1924], organized the Chicago Country Club which constructed the Valparaiso Country Club golf course and was instrumental in many other development activities in the community."[7]

"Other interests of Mr. Plew included the founding of the Shalimar Winery, which was established to use the surplus grape crop of the county. He also founded the Valparaiso Novelty Company, helped to establish a knitting mill in the community and was interested in a number of other enterprises to which he made investments to help their development."[7]
