Yuma, Arizona

Yuma is the principal city of the Yuma, Arizona, Metropolitan Statistical Area, which consists of Yuma County. According to the United States Census Bureau, the 2014 estimated population of the Yuma MSA is 203,247.[6] More than 85,000 retirees make Yuma their winter residence.[7]

In 1540, Spanish colonial expeditions under Hernando de Alarcon and Melchior Diaz visited the area and immediately recognized the natural crossing of the Colorado River as an ideal spot for a city. The Colorado River narrows to slightly under 1,000 feet wide in one area. Military expeditions that crossed the Colorado River at the Yuma Crossing include Juan Bautista de Anza (1774), the Mormon Battalion (1848) and the California Column (1862).

During and after the California Gold Rush to the late 1870s, the Yuma Crossing was known for its ferry crossings for the Southern Emigrant Trail. This was considered the gateway to California, as it was one of the few natural spots where travelers could cross the otherwise very wide Colorado River.

Polacca, Arizona

The rate of college-level education in Polacca is quite a bit lower than the national average among all cities of 21.84%: just 10.39% of people here over 25 have a bachelor's degree or an advanced degree. The per capita income in Polacca in 2010 was $10,331, which is low income relative to Arizona and the nation. This equates to an annual income of $41,324 for a family of four. Polacca also has one of the higher rates of people living in poverty in the nation, with 39.82% of its population below the federal poverty line.[2]

The town of Polacca does not have a sales tax and there is only one convenience store. There are no hotels, restaurants, gas stations, or department stores in Polacca. Many of the residents are employed by one of six major employers. Many of the residents not employed locally are artists who rely on tourists, local galleries, art shows, and internet sales.

The town of Polacca is located in northeastern Arizona on the Colorado Plateau. Natural resources on the Colorado Plateau include coal, uranium, petroleum, and natural gas. Polacca is located along Arizona State Route 264 7.5 miles (12.1 km) northeast of the Hopi Second Mesa. Polacca has a post office with ZIP code 86042.[3]

Round Rock, Arizona

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 14.4 square miles (37.2 km2), of which 14.2 square miles (36.9 km2) is land and 0.12 square miles (0.3 km2), or 0.68%, is water.[3]

As of the census[6] of 2000, there were 601 people, 144 households, and 127 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 42.7 people per square mile (16.5/km²). There were 242 housing units at an average density of 17.2/sq mi (6.6/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 99.67% Native American, 0.17% White, and 0.17% from other races. 0.17% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 144 households out of which 56.9% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 54.9% were married couples living together, 29.2% had a female householder with no husband present, and 11.8% were non-families. 10.4% of all households were made up of individuals and 4.9% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 4.17 and the average family size was 4.57.

Sedona, Arizona

Sedona /sɪˈdoʊnə/ is a city that straddles the county line between Coconino and Yavapai counties in the northern Verde Valley region of the U.S. state of Arizona. As of the 2010 census, its population was 10,031.[5]

Sedona's main attraction is its array of red sandstone formations. The formations appear to glow in brilliant orange and red when illuminated by the rising or setting sun. The red rocks form a popular backdrop for many activities, ranging from spiritual pursuits to the hundreds of hiking and mountain biking trails.

Sedona was named after Sedona Arabella Miller Schnebly (1877–1950), the wife of Theodore Carlton Schnebly, the city's first postmaster, who was celebrated for her hospitality and industriousness.[6] Her mother, Amanda Miller, claimed to have made the name up because "it sounded pretty".[7]

Supai, Arizona

Supai has been referred to as "the most remote community" in the contiguous United States by the U.S. Department of Agriculture.[5] It is accessible only by helicopter, on foot or by mule. Supai is 8 miles (13 km) from the nearest road and has no automobiles in the community.[4]

Tourists and some residents were evacuated from Supai and surrounding area on August 17 and 18, 2008,[6] due to flooding of Havasu Creek complicated by the failure of the earthen Redlands Dam (subsequent to the main flooding event[7][8]) after a night of heavy rainfall. Evacuees were taken to Peach Springs, Arizona.[9] More heavy rains were expected and a flash flood warning was put into effect, necessitating the evacuation, according to the National Park Service.[10] The floods were significant enough to attract coverage from international media.[9][11]

Damage to the trails, bridges, and campground was severe enough for Havasupai to close visitor access to the village, campground, and falls until the spring of 2009.[12] Further flooding in 2010 resulted in damage to repairs made previously and closures effective until May 2011.

Tsaile, Arizona

Tsaile is located at 36°18′17″N 109°13′24″W / 36.30472°N 109.22333°W / 36.30472; -109.22333 (36.304753, -109.223385),[4] about 29 miles (47 km) east of Chinle, just outside the boundaries of Canyon de Chelly National Monument.

According to the United States Census Bureau, the CDP has a total area of 6.0 square miles (15.5 km2), of which 5.9 square miles (15.4 km2) is land and 0.039 square miles (0.1 km2), or 0.88%, is water.[3]

As of the census[6] of 2000, there were 1,078 people, 244 households, and 200 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 179.5 people per square mile (69.3/km²). There were 345 housing units at an average density of 57.4/sq mi (22.2/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 93.32% Native American, 3.62% White, 0.09% Black or African American, 0.09% Asian, 0.09% Pacific Islander, 0.65% from other races, and 2.13% from two or more races. 1.30% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Willcox, Arizona

Originally known as "Maley", the town was founded in 1880 as a whistlestop on the Southern Pacific Railroad. It was renamed in honor of a visit by General Orlando B. Willcox in 1889. In the early 20th century, Willcox had the distinction of being a national leader in cattle production. Agriculture remains important to the local economy, but Interstate 10 has replaced the railroad as the major transportation link, and much of the economy is now tied to the highway, which runs immediately north of the town.

Willcox is the birthplace of Rex Allen, known as "The Arizona Cowboy", who wrote and recorded many songs, starred in several Westerns during the early 1950s and in the syndicated television series Frontier Doctor (1958–1959). Willcox was among the locations of 26 Men (1957–1959), another syndicated series that depicted true stories of the Arizona Rangers starring Tristram Coffin and Kelo Henderson.

Willcox is located in northern Cochise County at 32°15′20″N 109°50′8″W / 32.25556°N 109.83556°W / 32.25556; -109.83556 (32.255622, -109.835520)[4] in the Sulphur Springs Valley. Interstate 10 serves the city with three exits and leads 35 miles (56 km) southwest to Benson, Arizona, and 74 miles (119 km) east to Lordsburg, New Mexico.

Sacaton, Arizona

Sacaton (Pima: Geʼe Ki:) is a census-designated place (CDP) in Pinal County, Arizona, United States. The population was 1,584 at the 2000 census. It is the capital of the Gila River Indian Community.

As of the census[5] of 2000, there were 1,584 people, 378 households, and 303 families residing in the CDP. The population density was 667.1 people per square mile (258.1/km²). There were 387 housing units at an average density of 163.0/sq mi (63.0/km²). The racial makeup of the CDP was 1.96% White, 95.01% Native American, 0.06% Asian, 0.63% from other races, and 2.34% from two or more races. 7.07% of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

There were 378 households out of which 40.7% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 26.2% were married couples living together, 41.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 19.6% were non-families. 15.3% of all households were made up of individuals and 5.8% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 3.80 and the average family size was 4.12.

Seligman, Arizona

Seligman is located at 35°19′42″N 112°52′27″W / 35.32833°N 112.87417°W / 35.32833; -112.87417 (35.328199, −112.874303),[4] at 5,240 feet (1,600 m) in elevation, alongside the Big Chino Wash, in a northern section of Chino Valley. The wash is a major tributary of the Verde River. Seligman is a popular stopping point along Historic U.S. Route 66.

Originally, Seligman was called "Prescott Junction", because it was the railroad stop on the Santa Fe mainline junction with the Prescott and Arizona Central Railway Company feeder line running to Prescott, in the Arizona Territory.[5] The Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe Railway (AT&SF) had reached it in 1882.[5] In 1886 it was renamed Seligman, after Jesse Seligman, one of the founders of J.W. Seligman Co. of New York, who helped finance the railroad lines in the area.[5] The original feeder line to Prescott was replaced in 1891 by the Santa Fe, Prescott and Phoenix Railway with the Santa Fe mainline junction at Ash Fork instead.

Because of its flat land Seligman became a large switching yard consisting of many tracks, and served as a large livestock shipping center for the areas ranchers.[5] It was also a terminal point for changing train crews between Winslow and Needles, who used overnight cottages in the town.[6]
